What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is all about intentionally focusing your attention on the present moment. Taking time to reflect on the here and now. It’s important in the fast-paced, ever-changing world to take a moment, breath, and just be in the moment. It can help us become more aware of what is going on for us internally and externally.
Why be mindful?
Mindfulness practices can help us to increase our ability to regulate emotions, decrease stress, anxiety and depression. It can also help us to focus our attention, as well as to observe our thoughts and feelings without judgment. As we become more present in our lives and in relation to others, it can help us to make better decisions, to manage our emotions and to be more fully engaged in life.
Today’s Activity
Here is a suggestion for a unique mindful activity from the New York Times - Mindful Dish Washing. See the link below for the original article.
“We can be present in any moment of life, even when we’re busy washing the dishes. Rather than put off those household chores, embrace them as another opportunity to nurture and transform the mind.” – Andy Puddicombe, co-founder of the meditation app Headspace.
Take a deep breath before you begin. Exhale through your mouth.
Notice how your body feels, standing at the sink.
As you run the warm water, feel it flowing across your hands.
Picking up the first dish, handle it with care. Observe its shape. Notice its weight.
Starting to scrub, smell the soap and watch the bubbles foam.
If you notice that your mind has wandered, bring your attention back to the warmth of the water.
Repeat with each dish. It’s ok if your mind wanders, don’t be mad at yourself. Simply bring your attention back to what you are doing and continue.
