Outings

Each semester youth are given many opportunities to participate in engaging activities in the community and great outdoors. Below is a sampling of Mountain Alliance outings for a given year. Most of the outings are geared to a beginner and all equipment is provided. Check out the Trip Blog page for past stories from some of these outings.

Hike and Swim: This popular warm weather activity takes students on a energizing day hike into Pisgah National Forest where a refreshing swim awaits.

Elk Knob Trail Creation: This trip works on an ongoing project at Elk Knob State park that was begun more than 2 years ago. Students have been working to create a new trail for visitors to the park.

Hospitality House: This trip is one of the longest standing service offerings Mountain Alliance has been involved in. Each month students travel to Boone’s homeless shelter and prepare a meal for 30-40 individuals.

Rock Climbing: Students learn the basics of belaying and climbing while gaining confidence and compassion for others.

Caving: This is one of our most popular cold weather outing. Students love to explore and discover the dark and muddy passages of undeveloped caves in  our area. A great team work and exciting activity.

Overnight Backpacking: Youth learn to cook, camp and enjoy the outdoors using “Leave No Trace” ethics carrying their supplies and equipment on their backs for a wilderness adventure.

Spring Break Trips: These week long trips change each year and have included; Service trips to Washington, DC, rebuilding homes on the gulf coast (last four years), backpacking in Great Smoky Natational Park, Skiing in Colorado, and Biking on the Outerbanks

    Outdoor Photography Series

This 4 week series is all about learning to capture the beauty of our landscape with a camera. Each week builds on the previous as we learn new aspects of outdoor photography, in and around Watauga County. Often we are accompanied by a knowledgeable photographer from the community providing expert advice and teaching. At the end of the series each photographer picks their best shots for display during the Down Town Boone Art Crawl, November 1st at The Jone's House. Photo by: Chloe Crabtree, WHS senior
